Thing 18 Critical Thinker

Thing 18 Critical Thinker This section I have taken at a slower pace as there was quite a lot to think about and I didn’t want to rush it. Personal Information Management wasn’t something that I had thought about but it made sense to organize the information in a way that you can retrieve it when necessary.   Looking at different tools that are available, I thought about the ease of use for myself and how it could benefit me with my information management. I use “One Note” at work which I find easy to use and locate information. Although I didn’t have access to “Evernote” at work, I checked it out at home and found it to be quite similar in ways to “One Note”. I already used “Feedly” which I think is a useful tool to narrowing down articles one topic that interests you.   The only down side I find is actually getting the time to look at the articles.   It is maybe something I just need to schedule into my working routine. I did like “Pocket” for putting in ...

Thing 17 Sharing Your Work

Thing17 Sharing Your Work My position as part-time Library Assistant, I hadn’t considered writing and sharing work.   I decided to create a PowerPoint presentation on Information about the Library.   Occasionally I am asked to speak to a group of students about the Library. A PowerPoint presentation would be useful for such events. I looked at what information I wanted to give the students and promote the Library resources and facilities. I wanted to give an overview of the Library and how it can benefit the user and if they require help we are there to guide them to the information they require. I uploaded the PowerPoint presentation to Slide Share, which I found easy to use and copy the code to embed to my blog. HSC Library Craigavon from AlisonMoore41

Thing 16 Digital Footprint

Thing16 Digital Footprint It is a useful exercise to remember about our digital footprint.   I think a common sense approach is needed. Looking at our digital footprint reminds us to look critically at apps and sites we sign up to.   Too often we think that is a useful app/website and maybe look at the reviews before joining or downloading.   Our information can then be accessed by various organisations. Using our home laptop we were getting advertisements appearing down the side of our home emails.   When we visited a site, then it would appear in the side of our emails. Passwords can be another issue, I use a mix of lower/upper case letters, numbers and speech marks. After you create a password a box will appear questioning do you want to save the password to the computer.   I never do this because if your computer is stolen then anyone can access various sites you use.   If there is a problem with your computer and all the information is wiped th...

Thing 15 Evaluating Information

Thing 15 Evaluating Information Before looking at Thing 15 I would have rarely looked at Wikipedia except for a general overview of a topic. I probably had a negative viewpoint about it which was why I rarely visited the site. Now that I know how it works it does highlight my misconceptions. It is good to know that it has improved the encyclopaedias that I grew up with – The Joy of Knowledge was collected in our house.   It is good to have the Reading Lists that we can go to and explore a topic in more detail and it is encouraging that a lot of these references are available for free.   It is also comforting to know that Wikipedia keep an eye on edits and these can be reverted back within a relatively short space of time. One of the weaknesses described in the interview was diversity within Wikipedia and probably people have the misconceptions, which then stops them getting involved in Editing.   I think it is a good initiative to get Librarians involved 1lib...

Thing 14 Personnel Information Management

Thing 14 Personnel Information Management (PIM) My Personnel Information management is something I hadn’t looked at or considered before.  It makes sense to look at the information that we gather and try to organise it so that it is easily retrieved at any time.  At present my information is either kept in a diary, notebook, wipe board at home and various notes to myself.  At work we use “OneNote” for all our information, in an endeavour to move away from paper. Unfortunately at work I don’t have access to “Evernote” due to IT restrictions. I did create an account on my home computer and it seems very similar to “One Note”, which is allowed on our work computers. I have downloaded the “Evernote” app to my phone and I will hopefully use it in the future to organize my information better. I like this tool as it is similar to “One Note” and I did like the notifications element. Regarding “Feedly”, I already had an account.  I like this tool as you can nar...
