Thing 19 - Podcasts
I listened to the Podcast Librarian with, Jenny Foster was
being interviewed. I enjoyed listening
as Jenny came from an art background and I was a Textile Designer before I
became a Library Assistant. It was
interesting listening about the various Libraries amongst them where Jenny had
worked and hearing about her career development. Jenny’s latest position sounds very exciting
as she embarks on creating a Library in an innovative environment.
I then decided to listen to a Podcast from Librarian’s Aloud
to experience a different style of Podcast. Laura was talking to Andy
Tattersall and Jan Holmquist at the Internet Librarian International Conference
in London.
The interview with Andy explained how he got into the Library
Profession and then did a MSc in Information Management. His previous career as a Journalist he has
found useful for communication. Andy
talked about not over complicating the projects that we are involved in and he
also talked about Open Access and the benefits of it to researchers. Andy commented it was important we communicate
with the right information especially in the era of fake news.
Next to be interviewed was Jan Holmquist, whom I follow on
Twitter. It was interesting to learn
whilst doing his Library Degree he spent 6 months at UCD in the School of
Information Services. He has worked in
Public Libraries in Denmark and has had various roles in the same Library for
13 years. He had chosen Public Libraries to working in as he found this is
where he could make a real difference covering a wide range of ages. Jan in his spare time looked at the global
role of the Librarian and crowdfunded for a Library at a school in India and a
Mobile Library in Africa. He is a great
advocate of all Libraries bringing information, culture and literature to your
communities using different tools. Jan
said Libraries around the world can learn from each other.
I enjoyed listening to both Podcasts as they interviewed
various Librarians’ on their careers and the roles they fulfil. It was interesting to hear and get different
perspectives on various issues in the Librarian’s Aloud Podcast. I thought it
was a good balance of career development and the issues facing Libraries.
